Staring back was a disheveled boy not yet breaking double digits, yet ragged and worn in a way that broke Shěn Yuán’s modern heart. Shěn Yuán raised a small hand to his own cheek, and his chest shuddered with panic-edged breaths as he watched the boy in the reflection do the same.
He broke away from his reflection to slump back on his heels, staring out at the open sky like the heavens might hold some explanation. All around was unknown forest at the tail end of winter, shadowed and damp. A thousand blazing eyes blinked back, waiting. Hungry.
