There was this softer version of Ghost that existed, that only MacTavish seemed to see.
He’d get strange looks if he ever mentioned it to anyone, Ghost included.

But— but, this year, he had Ghost.
I WILL CRY
“It’s for me?” MacTavish had to yell to be heard over the clamour, and the resulting glare Ghost shot him was like he had personally insulted him— the next moment, though, Ghost chewed on the inside of his cheek, shook his head and gave an exasperated sort of sigh, only slightly undercut by the strange sort of fondness that softened the edges of his expression. He flicked the lighter on, golden flames reflecting in his glasses and his eyes as he lit the wick, before tilting the bottle towards him—
“Come on, then, captain, make a wish.”
“Jesus Christ, Riley—”
“It’s going to blow, sir, hurry up—”
“Fucking throw it, then!”
“Johnny—”
It was going to fucking blow up in his hand; exasperated, absolutely disbelieving, Soap yanked Ghost’s wrist towards him and blew on the wick, doing nothing but making the flames brighter— but at that, Ghost beamed, bright and wide even under the mask, and there it went, again.
It was ridiculous. The Molotov was about three seconds from exploding in his hand and showering them both with shattered glass and burning alcohol.

It was killing him, all at once. Sharper than glass and hotter than flame. It was stealing all the air out of his chest. He was there— right there, smiling at him like it was just him and Soap, and nothing else in the universe— and he was seized with it for a moment, spurred on by hot, sparking flames—
He didn’t need a wish to do it. All he needed was to tangle a hand in the straps of his vest, and in the cropped blond hair at the back of his head. There wasn’t time to lift the mask up over his nose and he didn’t need to, didn’t care about the blood staining it, would drink it like communion wine if that’s what it took.
He could hear the thump of his heartbeat in his ears. It was overwhelmingly warm, and if the scent of smoke was indistinguishable from the scent of Ghost’s skin, if adrenaline tasted the same as love, hot and heady and murderous, then all he had to do was lean in, cup a hand around the back of his head, pull him in, feel the heat radiating off of him, and—
The bullet flying through the window came so close to the back of Ghost’s head that he felt the heat of it graze his knuckles, searingly warm.

He was holding the lighter so tightly he was almost sure it would have imprinted into his hand— he sat back on Ghost’s legs, leaning back where he was still crowding over him.
Ghost didn’t let go of him. He was still shaking, but he looked down, and realised it wasn’t adrenaline, but laughter— he could feel it pressed against his chest, and then, as he leaned back, he could hear it— it rang out, loud and unabashed, as Ghost met his eye, and laughed louder—
“Jesus Christ, Johnny,” and it was echoing around, raspy at the edges, bright and unrestrained, “what the fuck did you put in that wish?”
Stunned for a moment, MacTavish just gaped at him, wordless— Ghost laughed harder at his own joke, hands squeezing into fists in his vest as his shoulders shook—
He’d heard Ghost laugh before. He’d heard the soft chuckles he’d smother when someone told a joke he didn’t want to find funny, or the stifled giggles when tension bled through, terse and edgy— but Ghost always found new ways to stun him into silence, had taken apart an entire building with a bottle of old whiskey and a good arm, and he was laughing with his entire chest, louder than the explosion and entirely unguarded in a way Ghost simply never was. His eyes narrowed into half moons behind the glasses, smile lines creasing around old scars that made it look like he was smiling even deeper than he was— and maybe it was lucky that he still had the mask on, because it was like his entire world narrowed to the sound.
“All stations,” MacTavish replied— he knew they could all hear how hard Ghost was laughing, and was suddenly gripped with the urge to keep the sound all to himself, stuff it in his chest like a secret— “I think— I think that’s all of ‘em.”
“You’re so—,” he lifted a hand to Ghost’s wrist to get him to stop, and simply looked up at him for a moment, exasperated and helpless and everything in between. He huffed a little laugh, and when Ghost blinked, took the case off of him and tucked it back in front of his vest.
“Unbelievable,” he finished, distinctly breathless— “you’re so unbelievable, Simon.”
He never normally called him by his name in the field; but Ghost didn’t oppose it, simply huffed a laugh and offered him a hand up.

An alternate first meeting, where Ghost and Soap meet each other in the field under infinitely worse circumstances than either of them would have liked:
Ghost wakes up in a pit under a building with a bomb attached to him, certain he's going to die. Soap, an EOD tech amongst his other specialties, is the only person available to at least try to save him. It should be fraught, and tense, and miserable all around, and it is; a whole lot of Ghost slowly losing his mind while Soap does everything he can to save his life. But it would probably be easier if Ghost wasn't a stress-flirter, and if Soap wasn't the kind of endlessly competent that he loved, and if, by virtue of their situation, they didn't keep ripping open each other's wounds and then patching each other back up again after.
