Summary
Roughly a year after the events of Inception, Dom is killed because he never gave up extraction. As godfather, Arthur is given custody of Phillipa and James. To protect them and keep them safe, he fakes his death and goes into hiding with them. Meanwhile, Eames is mourning Arthur and the chance they never really had together. When he tries to tie up Arthur’s loose ends for him, he realizes: Arthur's already done it. Arthur is alive and Eames sets out to find him.
Neither of them ever imagined themselves living a normal, domestic life, or being parents. In the end, Arthur and Eames both need to decide what they want out of life, and who they want it with.

“The test.” Dom looks back at him, frowning. “The one you’re helping me with? Clearly this mix isn’t going to work for what we want.”Arthur feels a headache coming on, a stabbing pressure forming behind his left eye. “I… Is that what happened? You’re—testing different compounds. On me.”
Dom hesitates, a strange expression crossing his face. “…Arthur. What’s wrong?”
“Did I know that?” he asks.
“Arthur!” Arthur turns, watching Eames walk into the clearing. Unlike Dom, he looks like he hasn’t had any problems navigating the labyrinth.
Arthur turns back to Dom, who is staring between him and Eames, looking skittish and wrong. “Arthur,” he says, a pleading note to his voice. “You’re the best at testing new compounds. You know that.”
He does. He’s always the test subject—always has been, as far back as his army days, due to his grasp on reality and how stable his dreamscapes always are. But…
He looks over at Eames; he doesn’t know if Eames is real or a projection anymore than he knows what Dom is, but he still says, “I didn’t know. I wouldn’t have agreed to test anything.”
Eames’s expression softens, and he reaches a hand out for him. “I know, darling. Come with me now, please? They’re having a hard time waking you.”
“No,” Dom says, stepping forward and reaching for Arthur. “It’s fine. It’s going to wear off. Arthur, please.”
Arthur looks at him and sidesteps away.
“Don’t leave me here,” Dom pleads, eyes wide. “Arthur. Think of the kids. And Mal. I need your help—”
“No,” he says firmly. He steps forward, and presses the sword into Dom’s hands. “Get yourself out of this. I’m done.” He looks back at Eames, a brief smile flitting over his face before he looks back at Dom again. “You have no power over me.”
For the first time in his life, Arthur turns his back on Dominic Cobb. Eames watches him, brow furrowed, worry in his eyes, and he holds out his hand. Arthur takes it, threading their fingers together. “Lead the way,” he says softly. “I’ll be right behind you.”
Arthur blinks awake to the sight of the Cobb’s living room ceiling. His head feels like someone has shoved an ice pick behind his ear, and he feels like he’s been sleeping for a week. He reaches a hand up to cover his eyes and block the light, groaning.
A hand touches his wrist, and he feels the cannula being pulled out, someone gently disconnecting him from the PASIV. Another hand brushes over his hair and cups his cheek. “Arthur? Come on, darling, look at me, please.”
Arthur lets Eames gently peel his hand away from his face, and he blinks up at him, disoriented and confused. He’s not sure what was real and what was part of the dream, now. “…Eames?”
Eames lets out a shaky breath and leans down, pressing their foreheads together. “You’re all right. Take it easy, now.”
“How is he?”
Arthur tenses at the sound of Dom’s voice, but Eames shushes him, grounding him with his touches. “It’s all right. That was a projection, love. It wasn’t Cobb. You had a reaction to a new compound, but you’re going to be fine.”
He blinks up at him, feeling like his brain has gone fuzzy and he’s missing something big and important. “…You—you were really there. You came in after me?”
Eames colors a bit, shrugging a shoulder. He continues stroking a hand through Arthur’s hair. “It was the only thing we hadn’t tried.”
Arthur blinks stupidly up at him, and then smacks his shoulder, as hard as he can manage. “You idiot! You could’ve—”
Eames leans in and closes the distance between them with a kiss, cutting Arthur off. “Darling,” he says, quietly so only Arthur can hear him. “There’s nowhere you could go that I wouldn’t follow.”
He carefully pulls Arthur up to a seated position and pulls him in, holding him close and safe, and Arthur lets him. He closes his eyes and thinks of Mal, and of Orpheus and Eurydice, and of the chance Eames took. And he knows he would have done the same thing for Eames.
