They have to be bare, have to surrender the deepest crevice of their soul to one another. And Ilya, for whom this is easier said than done, whose chest carries a perpetual weight, an immovable mass, it’s all worth it – worth the relief smoothing over Shane’s features, the reassurance that he’s not worried anymore, that Ilya can give him this peace, albeit only a fragment of what Shane gives him by just being there when he wakes up. He would never say it, but he thinks that what he has to offer to Shane amounts to nothing – nothing compared to what Shane does, what Shane is, by simply nuzzling into his chest and sighing into his sleep, late at night when all Ilya can do is lay awake and just feel.
“I need more,” Ilya says. “And is nothing you can do. I need you inside me, and it feels terrible.” He swallows, with great difficulty. God. “I need to– I need to eat you.”

As if under a spell, she leaned in again and pressed a light kiss to the corner of his lips.
It had been gentle and brief – but this time, his breathing did change: not abruptly, not in any way that suggested he was startled, but enough that she noticed, and knew that he wasn’t sleeping anymore.
“You’re awake,” she murmured, the words slipping out low and quiet, trying to not disturb the quietness of the morning.
There had been a pause, then along with a small stretch, a soft sound came from Xie Zheng – sleepy and ridiculously comfortable even from her outsider view.
“Mm.”
Her hand drifted up to smooth over his beautiful hair in a gentle caress automatically, making Xie Zheng simply melt under her touch with a satisfied hum.
But she noticed the faint, smug smirk in the corner of his lips – entirely at odds with the soft atmosphere. It didn’t take long for her to figure out why he had that expression on his face.
Her eyes narrowed slightly, watching him with a mixture of exasperation, fondness, and slight embarrassment due to her actions.
“You were pretending,” she accused him, pursing her lips, feeling betrayed.
