While alone in a hotel room last year, Shane watched a 60 Minutes episode about a woman who had lost her face in an animal attack. At the point in the interview when the woman lifted her veil, Shane wanted to look away, but then felt ashamed at his inability to tolerate a picture on a screen. He regretted it immediately.
The image had stuck with him for days afterward, flashing whenever he closed his eyes. As the memory made itself known at inconvenient times, the intense wrongwrongwrong sensation did not get better. If anything, it got worse as his mind warped the image into something more and more horrifying, especially in his dreams.
Shane felt the same when he saw a person without a daemon. That was magnified tenfold when he saw Ilya Rozonov in the same state.

He sat up against the headboard with his dæmon perched next to his ear, while Sidney lay on his back and his own soul curled at the foot of the bed. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d talked about this. People never really asked, always assumed it was too personal or a sore point. But he was nearly forty, he’d- well. If not gotten over it, he could identify other things about his childhood that troubled him more.

Reports came from the other athletes in Fox Tower, unanimous and clear: an unconscious Jean Moreau was seen carried out by security, bloody, with lacerations covering his arms and torso. Behind him medics rolled a covered cart large enough for a couch or fridge. Presumably carrying his daemon.
The real leak came two days after. A security guard told someone who told someone who told the media that allegedly, Jean was found in the wrecked dorm of Kevin Day. Specifically found locked in the bathroom. One quote circulated like fire across news sites and gossip columns: “We had to tranquilize his daemon. She was trying to kill him.”

Picking up just after the moment of the explosion that destroys the window between worlds at the conclusion of the Rose Field, this alternate ending diverges immediately with a heart-wrenching twist that leaves the finale in a different place.
The scenes that follow have been written to closely match Pullman’s original intent, with some key changes and additions to give the conclusion to Lyra’s story a deeper gravity. Pullman’s original text is used in some places, but most is completely original, and both are tightly woven together where they coincide. I did my best to respect Pullman’s authorial and philosophical intent, and I certainly hope this alternate conclusion befits the end of a series that many, myself included, found extremely touching.
The first chapter posted here is a modification of the end of Chapter 35 that adjusts some key details, allowing the new scenes to be inserted immediately at the beginning of the final chapter. The second, Chapter 36, has a slightly different title, and is largely my original work, though much of Lyra and Pan’s conversations have been preserved and woven in where they fit nicely.
I hope you enjoy this alternative ending, it was a pleasure to write.
