“Forced!” Fingon slammed the goblet down. It fell, splashing red wine in an arc across the rug and the hem of Fingon’s fine robes. Fingon spread his arms wide so that Maedhros could see his soiled robe, the red soaking the dark blue so that it was nearly black. “Yes, indeed, this is the look of someone who forces you to do a thing against your will.”

"You should have killed me then," Maedhros shattered the silence, and the fragments drew blood as they tore into the younger one’s lungs. "You should have cut my throat, not my wrist."
His tone was tired but set, bearing down on the shards in Fingon’s chest. The dark-haired Elf brought his hand up to Maedhros’ shoulder, holding on as his breathing caught in his throat.
He shook his head.
"I couldn’t," he whispered. "My heart would have died alongside yours."
After his rescue from Thangorodrim, Maedhros is struggling to cope with the memories and with feelings of regret and self-doubt. Fingon, meanwhile, is doing what he can to help and reassure.

The flames that destroy the grasses are not like the controlled flames of autumn that yearly renew the land, but these are poisonous flames that lick the land with the venom of death. Insatiable they annihilate the very life of the soil, gluttonously devouring everything that lives upon it and under it, the the sleeping cicadas, the brittle switchgrass, the slumbering milkweed, dock and fennel, deer and dormice, yea, even the worms that nourish the earth; and you know with the knowledge of death that it will be barren forever.
