Ed thought he was done making deals and paying tolls. He knew Equivalent Exchange wasn't equal, but when his name is at risk of being lost to the sands, Ed makes one more pact. If he wants his Ishvalan name he's got to live like an Ishvalan.
He hadn't really considered the ramifications of having that conversation with Ishvala himself.
The incense that Ed had been expecting since he stepped off the train filled the house and Ed took in a deep breath. If he closed his eyes he could hear Serjo Odral’s laugh above the din of conversation, the squealing of children as they raced around the house even as the aunties scolded them to run outside. He could smell kadirsh baking in the oven and feel his mom’s hands as she stroked his hair.
For a moment he had his family back.
“This way,” Dalden repeated grumpily, shattering the illusion.
