    “Would you have chosen for me to have favoured you?” Jace asks, and his breath is hot against her throat. “To have your silver hair? Your purple eyes?”

    They are so close, Rhaenyra suddenly notices. As if he had somehow managed to creep up without her noticing.

    Of course it isn’t that, she has just been far too distracted to realise that their bodies are mere inches apart from each other.

    Slowly, she drags in a breath and notices Jace watch the way that her throat bobs.

    She should lie. Should tell him what it’s so painfully clear that he wishes to hear. To break his heart only to strengthen him into the man he is becoming.

    But she loves him far too much to do that.
