Weeks later, when the news finally breaks, the headlines will call it a “catastrophic brain injury”.
They’ll analyze the hit from every angle, trying to find just what went so wrong. It was clean, it was legal… and yet it somehow slammed Shane Hollander into the ice hard enough to end his career.

This is hard to read but ultimately satisfying. Also, speaking as a rehab professional, pretty accurate.

“My boyfriend thinks I’m an idiot,” Ilya says. "Well, not really but a bit, maybe.”
“Your boyfriend?” Sandra, the queer studies professor sits down, hard.
“Yes, he thinks it is not smart to say faggot in the locker room when you are locked in the closet and Russia has the keys.”
Ilya had been talking about himself when he’d said it. Making a joke. Sailing a little close to the wind, sick of listening to the background hum of homophobic bullshit. But someone had been filming. The video went viral. The Raiders panicked under the terrible PR. Now he was here.
Sent to Queer Studies 101 to appease twitter. Because he’d been cancelled. For being a homophobe. If was fucking ridiculous.
He turns to the professor. “So, can you help me take on Putin and NHL at same time or I need more advanced class for this?”
Plus Chapter 2 – Social media chapter. Once they've been outed, Ilya gets to demand an apology from twitter.

@HarveySmth76:
So, Dallas Kent's teammate just tweeted this:Rozanov isn’t any better, though. Like we all know it. Dude's banged like a thousand women. Bet if even just a few of them talked, you'd all be shutting up about Kent pretty quick.
----
Dallas Kent’s teammate makes a bigoted assumption. A very loud, very incorrect assumption. Twitter eats him alive.
Because, yes, Rozanov has slept with a lot of women and they have a lot to say. About consent and check-ins and that accent.
#OkIWillTalk is trending, as is #SexGodOfTwitter. Toronto Survivor's Legal Fund is finally gaining some traction. And Ilya is definitely going to punch Kent. Again.
Told through twitter snapshots and extracts from the Ottawa Centaurs Group Chat.

Summary
“I think we need a plan.”
“I thought we have a plan?” Ilya asked, gruffly, his brow furrowing in confusion.
“I just mean…” Shane’s face was serious; his eyes were doing that puppy-dog thing that Ilya couldn’t resist, where they looked earnest and soft and serious all at once. "What if we didn’t wait to come out? Rather than waiting until we retire. Maybe, I don’t know, stopped hiding quite so much and just… let people figure it out, eventually.”
Changing the Narrative, or; Hollander and Rozanov's Guide to a Gentle Take-Off
Shane and Ilya are done hiding. Coming out, however, is another story. Between family, friends, fans, teammates, and a league still grappling with inclusivity, changing the narrative might just prove more complicated than they expected.

Beautifully written
“ For so many years, he had tried to build his life into a meticulous tapestry. It had taken him so many hours, so many years of deftly untangling so many knotted threads. And for so long, he had tried to keep each one separate. The bright gold of Boston, the deep, heavy iron of Moscow, the warm amber of his mother. But then there had been Shane, a vibrant, dangerous crimson, who had come along and pulled each one tight, and convinced him that each loose thread was worthy of a tapestry.
But a tapestry required a loom. And it needed time.
And the bright, shimmering golden thread of Boston had run out.”
