And there it was again. That heaviness, that shift in the air that makes everything feel just a little slower. It’s like just moving forward makes him sore from the exertion. It’s not in the least physical, it’s his heart and mind and soul that feels stretched and pushed too far. It’s those moments, where his heart feels like it’s thudding only because it still can, that Louis feels the itch to glance at the clock. When he aches to know how long it’s been and maybe a part of him is wondering how long it will be. If this time, when he checks the clock, he’ll feel the same shame for his long stint of grief, but it will be followed by some sort of pride. He’s made it this far, and “because it still can” is a perfectly good reason for his heart to keep beating.
“What are you thinking about?” Harry asks.
Louis hums, shifting a little to rest his head on top of Harry’s. “Is this your new question?"
“Yeah,” he whispers, softly.
“Just… thinking about how long it’s been. And how long it may be before it doesn’t hurt so much anymore."
Harry is a ghost who comes to visit. Louis feels like a ghost, himself. In forgiveness, they find their way back to life.

The doors to the ballroom open and violin music fills Harry’s ears, his skin prickling as he tightens his hold on Liam’s arm. All eyes fall on him as he makes his grand entrance next to Lord Payne, Earl of Wolverhampton. According to the media, they’re the couple of the century, but little do they know they’re not really dating. Harry tugs on his collar, the tightness around his neck almost too much. He’ll never get used to being Prince of Cheshire. Not only are wearing his royal garments a pain in the arse, he also hates all of the attention it garners.
There’s only one person’s attention Harry really wants.

Louis grabbed the nearest pen like he was considering a murder. “Say princess again, I dare you.”
Harry’s grin went downright evil. “Princess.”
“You’re insufferable,” he hissed. “Actually insufferable. If you vanished tomorrow, I would personally throw a parade.”
Harry leaned in again, chin propped on his hand, dimples in full force. “Cute parade? Pink streamers? Princess-themed?”
Louis made a sound that was halfway between a groan and a scream, grabbed his notebook, and buried his face in it. “I hope you fall in the fountain on your way home. And then get pneumonia. And then fail your finals.”
Harry beamed at him like Louis had just proposed marriage. “God, you’re adorable when you threaten me.”
Or- Louis is just trying to graduate without losing his mind — but apparently the universe has other plans, because Harry keeps showing up in the uni coffee shop, grinning like he’s flirting on purpose (he definitely is). Between coffee shop bickering, campus fair chaos, and way too many run-ins with the man, Louis’ biggest problem isn’t hating Harry anymore… It’s pretending he doesn’t want to climb him like a tree.

“Baby, I think a quick trip to A&E might do you some good, hm?” Louis keeps his voice as calm as possible. He doesn't want to startle Harry or make him scared, but he knows that Harry’s fever is too high and he can't risk Harry choking himself into another attack when he's so poorly.
He hears a sharp intake of breath come for Harry and he knows Harry is starting to panic. Louis moves his hand from Harry's hair to his back, rubbing circles into his sweat-soaked shirt.
“No, no. Shh, don't worry, darling. Everything is okay, you’ll be okay. I just know that the doctors will be able to make you feel much better much sooner than I can...Just want you to get healthy as soon as possible, okay?”

A constant routine of meeting up at the elevator in the mornings, talking about whatever comes to mind so god forsaken early in the morning and then repeating the routine again at night with the bonus of groceries (which means amazing, mouth watering leftovers at Louis' door the next morning) or a sweaty Harry in blinding neon sneakers that remind Louis of a highlighter.
It's a thing and even if neither realize it, they appreciate every morning and evening they get to see each other.

“Doesn’t feel like it. And you know what pisses me off the most? You walk around like you’ve got a stick up your arse. No matter what I do, you have that superior attitude, drives me absolutely mental.”
Harry lets out a humorless laugh, stepping just a little closer. “Ever wonder why? Your manners are awful, Tomlinson. Anything I say, you do exactly—” Louis’ lips curl, a smirk tugging at the corner as he tilts his head, smoke trailing up. “The opposite… YOU DO IT ON PURPOSE.”

Niall sighs in the way that a disappointed parent might. “Louis, please don’t take this in the wrong way, because I’m not judging you at all. But is there any possibility that you’re pregnant?”
Louis scoffs. Technically, it is possible. Louis’ known he was a male carrier since his routine physical when he was sixteen. But it isn’t actually possible, not really. He and Harry always use a condom.
Except for that one day a few weeks ago when Louis had forgotten to buy more and they couldn’t wait. And the time the week before that when the condom had broke, but they both figured it was probably fine.
