Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Canada’s blankest canvas. The face they could project onto without having to see, the way you could stare at the night sky and find whatever constellation you’d already decided to look for.

He wears it to his next night shift without irony or apology.
Ilya notices immediately. He is fascinated.

Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.
A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

Part II to Vestigial Instincts
Very very good writing, but hard/uncomfortable read in places when Ilya is in the throes of his depression/feelings (but too good to actually click away from). They have very real/mean fights that feel human.maybe it's the way the landscape seems to draw them into a protective embrace, as if holding only Shane, Ilya, and their car in its palms, offering them sight of the sun, dancing playfully with the waves, rolling leisurely along the sea's crystalline surface.
It's a part of Shane Ilya never got to see when their relationship was kept to just hotel rooms. Shane has so much love in his heart for the natural world. Even though he's driving, Shane's face lights up with total awe when he sees the view of water. The joy completely transforms him.
When Shane glances back on the road, he shoots Ilya another smile, like he can't believe they are here together. He repeats the phrase he was trying to teach Ilya one last time. "It was one of the first sentences I learned how to say in French," Shane says. He rolls down his window, and the sound of waves, the howl of humid wind, and the distant chirps of cicadas pour in. He repeats himself one last time, and translates the phrase for Ilya. After rain comes fair weather.

In sum: Shane and Ilya find each other over a decade of hurt, draw boundaries, and re-learn. Older hollanov, i.e., ultimately a more mature Ilya and Shane.
NB In context, the cheating ... falls into a grey area. Not quite "cheating" per se (especially in retrospect for reasons that are revealed later) but not exactly morally acceptable either.
