The door opens.
Claire chokes. Ryland is standing there in blue PJ pants and an oversized PBS t-shirt. He's rubbing his eyes, which are missing his glasses, which makes it even more obvious how similar they look. When his hand falls away, Six watches him process what is standing at his door. His eyes go from Six, down to Claire, then back up to Six.
He laughs, high and stressed, then closes the door in their face.
OR, Six needs help taking care of Claire after they break free from their respective jails. He decides that his younger brother Ryland Grace is the solution.

He hopped in the driver’s seat and subtly took a breath, grabbing the wheel tightly, the leather of his wet gloves squeaking. He could hear a buzzing in his ears, a growing drone overtaking the sound of the rain hitting the roof. He stared at the writhing lump over in the mud.
He’d touched him. He’d HURT him. Ambushed him. Threatened him. Soiled him. Driver should’ve been there, should’ve cut him off before he’d have had the chance to slam into him. Driver should’ve taken the attacker’s knife out from his pocket and used it on him, right in the throat to quell his screams, all without 306 ever knowing--
“Thanks again,” his neighbor said, breaking the silence. He fiddled with the folds of his balled up, inside out raincoat sitting in his lap. “For… well, all of these things. That you’re doing. And have done. Heh.”
Driver looked over at 306. He looked pathetic, absolutely soaked in rain and covered with dirt and blood, smile weak and apologetic. He was beautiful.
“It’s no problem,” Driver said, smiling again.

Six enrolled Claire in Ryland’s middle school, Grace and driver became a thing a few years ago and Grace has ✨ trauma✨ from pops and being unable to protect his baby brothers, thinks Six was killed in prison and Colt sent him away after breaking his back (recent). Grace caught driver injured after job gone bad and asked to help, not pressing for truth

“I’ll wash your jacket,” Lars says, holding his hand out. The bottom half of Driver’s jacket is dark and stained with blood. (The blood goes all the way around, like it’s not only from Driver’s injury. Lars pretends not to notice.) It’s ripped, next to the zipper, from the knife that was in his stomach. Lars doesn’t think Driver should wear a bloody jacket.
Driver shakes his head, eyeing Lars warily.
Well. That’s okay. Lars doesn’t like when people take his blanket, either.

To say that Ryland Grace and Simon of Eden get off on the wrong foot would be the understatement of the century.
Being rescued didn’t miraculously solve all of Simon’s problems. He has a lot to adjust to. Being a fresh amputee, the stars not being dead, aliens being real, living on an alien planet, having a human neighbor who doesn't want to kill him, trusting in this so-called “reality” that’s too good to be true… yeah, no, making friends isn’t a priority. Exiting survival mode is easier said than done. He barely even knows who he is when he’s not fighting tooth and nail.
Grace is doing his best not to get attached to the handsome stranger he helped save. Simon may choose to leave Erid once he’s healed. He’s not so desperate for human company that he’d pursue someone who attacked him in their first-ever interaction. He has a good life here on Erid; he totally doesn’t dream of holding another human being’s hand, or being looked at fondly by someone with eyes, or seeing another person’s smile. He has Rocky and Adrian, who are more than enough family for him.
But who does Simon have, if not Grace?

Scruffy beard, glasses, hair in disarray. He's in a simple button-down and jeans, no place to hide any meaningful weapons, and faces away from Driver—exposes his vulnerable side, forgoes line of sight—to crouch in front of two boys who have been so silent he only now notices.
“C'mere,” the man mutters. He hoists one of them up and into his arms. The boy rests his cheek on the man's shoulder with a quiet sniffle, eyes squeezed shut. His small hands wrap around the man's nape in a death grip. He has a SpongeBob-patterned bandaid on his nose bridge.
The other boy grips onto the man's shirt hem with just as much vigor, though his eyes are wide open. He looks up at Driver with pointed eyes, clear and devastatingly full of suspicion.
They look at each other for half a moment of contemplative quiet.
Then, softly, “What floor?” Driver asks.
The elevator door closes.

Driver moves to the new apartment. Instead of Irene, his neighbor is kind teacher Ryland Grace with two twin younger brothers he's taking care of.

The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.

Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

Mindy Park is rapidly realising that the first intelligent extraterrestrial to make contact with the human race thinks they’re fucking stupid. She’s pretty sure that Dr Grace isn’t accurately translating half the things Rocky is saying, but most of what he is telling her is that Rocky has a better way of doing what NASA wants them to do, and honestly, it seems like Rocky is mostly right. She probably doesn’t want to know what the other half of what Grace’s new alien friend is saying, if the things that are making it through what she’s calling the “middle school teacher filter” are “why would you do something the dumb way when you could do it the right way”.
