    Summary

Shane is in a post-game interview when his world stops.

He’s just answered a question about Montreal’s offensive strategy going into the game. Clean passes, avoid penalties, draw defenders wide. It had worked and the Voyagers had beat Colorado soundly, 4-1. Shane had scored two of the goals and assisted on a third.

Usually, Shane would be eager to boast about the win to Ilya. But ever since their fight- since Ilya told Shane to leave- winning feels hollow. Losing feels better, somehow. As if Shane deserves to lose after being so selfish. Ilya gave up everything for him- his home, his team, and to some extent- his happiness. Hockey. Ilya gave up hockey- good hockey- for Shane.

A ripple goes through the room of reporters. Shane swears he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘crash’. But no one is paying attention to him anymore.

“What’s going on?” he asks into the microphone, feeling strange at the role reversal. Usually, he’s the one being asked questions.

No one answers. And this time he knows that he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘Centaurs’.

    ------------------------------------------

Shane rushes to Ilya after the almost plane crash. Their secret is no longer a secret.

    Summary

Before Ilya can bite out a teasing remark at his state, Hollander starts to speak in a jumble of words that seem like they’ve been on the verge of spilling out for a long time.

“Don't marry her, Ilya." Hollander says desperately, now using the hold they had on each other for balance just a moment ago, to keep Ilya from running away. “Please, don’t marry her.”

“Hollander?” Ilya says the name dumbly, at a loss for how to answer.

    --

Marrying Svetlana seems like the obvious solution to the growing pile of problems in Ilya's life. It's not like Hollander would care since he's dating one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Right?

    Summary

He’d spent his whole life being looked down on by everyone else as a runt, scraping by, proving himself, clawing for every scrap of respect he could get, and in that life, jealousy had no place

He didn’t get jealous when he saw a taller Yautja, didn’t get jealous when his father spoke fondly of Kwei while ignoring him, and he certainly wasn’t jealous now, not when Thia had shifted her attention completely to the absolute fucker who was standing a few feet away, grinning at her like he owned the moment.

He could pretend he wasn’t paying attention, could busy himself with something else, pretend his eyes were elsewhere, but he didn’t.

Instead, he crossed his arms and stared, because making sure they know that his presence was unwelcome was the most natural thing in the world it was his tent after all but striking forward, breaking Tekreh’s mandibles just because he smiled strangely at Thia? That would be…not normal. It's not like that he liked her, right?

    Or

    Dek is jealous

    Summary

"It’s in her programming, is the thing; written in Thia’s very core is the directive to learn about every creature she meets, to know each one down to its bones and beyond, to unpick the delicate relational web inside which they exist. It’s why Weyland-Yutani gave Thia that enhanced sensitivity, the double-sided blade that let her perform so effectively but also led her to betray her makers in the end. Empathy feeds curiosity in an endless positive feedback loop. The longer she knows Dek, the more she wants to know about him. Thia has never experienced hunger, doesn’t even have a digestive system to speak of, but this yearning at her core–is this what hunger is like?"

Dek is made vulnerable by a hunt gone slightly wrong, and finds himself in need of help. Thia is more than happy to lend a hand, as it were.

    Summary

    “Unlock the door, Hollander.”

Even though Shane couldn’t hear the exact words, he knew what Ilya said. He shook his head.

“Unlock the door, or I will break the glass. Your choice.”

Shane’s eyes widened again and he briefly hung his head as if regretting all of his past life decisions, and Ilya heard the resounding click of the unlock mechanism.

He felt wild, his mind in violent turmoil as he threw open the door and his palm clutched the back of Shane’s head, his fingers finding purchase in the coarse hair. “Are you listening to me?” Shane ducked his head in acknowledgment. “I’m going to call off my driver. You will not move. I am going to sit there-“ he pointed at the empty passenger seat. “-in this boring car of yours and I am going to find out why the fuck you are alone and who the fuck made you cry.”

    *************************************************************

Inspired by Shane’s confession in The Long Game (*mini-spoiler*) about his whereabouts after leaving a certain Montreal nightclub in January 2017, Ilya leaves the club shortly after Shane only to find him pulled over on the side of the road, devastated.
