It had been— difficult. Doing it himself, without Ilya there to monitor. And then he had knelt apologetically at Ilya’s feet, confessing shamefacedly that he’d done it again, he’d come when he wasn’t supposed to. And Ilya’s face had changed— not to anger, it was never anger, even when he pretended at it, just a kind of electric anticipation, his lips curling back over his teeth like he was trying to taste Shane in the air— before Shane had blurted out I ruined it, though. He’d sat up a little straighter.
A pause. Ruined it, solnyshko?
Shane had nodded.

Summary
Shane’s good at his job.
Really, he is.
Five and a half years at Allocare and he’s learned to talk the talk and walk the walk. He’s good. His team lead tells him he’s going to make that promotion this year, actually - managing accounts is easy, and he’s got a rhythm now.
Ilya Rozanov, on the other hand, isn’t easy. Shane’s pretty sure he’s come straight from hell itself if he’s honest - now there’s only one thing standing between Shane and the promotion he’s gunning for, and it’s his brand new, 6’3 Russian client with no regards for professional boundaries.
He has a good mouth, though.

Summary
Shane is lonely. He knows this because there have been multiple attempts by different people in his life to make him acknowledge this. It has been an increasing concern for his parents, who previously kept their comments sparse, before his career kicked off in earnest and they could finally iron out some of his social flaws. This manifests in increasingly farfetched and undesirable suggestions - you should join a running club; you should email this influencer - you never know!; you should see if that brand ambassador could be your plus one to this event.
His friends, too, keep poking their noses in his business. Some of his them are easier to shake off - Hayden goes quiet after a few noncommittal hums from him at the suggestion of a double date. JJ is happy if they get a beer once in a while. Rose however - Rose buys him a dog.
