Summary
Zoey learns that when things are far away enough, there’s a point where it doesn’t matter so much exactly how far they are. Alpha Centauri is four and a quarter lightyears away from Earth; Burbank is nine thousand five hundred kilometres away from Seoul; Rumi’s house is five hundred metres away from Zoey’s old house.
Zoey’s new house might as well be on Alpha Centauri. Because either way, Zoey can’t walk to Rumi’s house anymore. Zoey can’t see her in school anymore. Zoey can’t see her—
“It’s the same hemisphere,” Rumi says, quietly. Her eyes don’t go with her smile. “So we’ll see the same stars.”

Honestly, Mira can’t even imagine Rumi singing this with anyone else. It feels almost spontaneous, and yet inevitable, the give and take, the way they orbit around each other. Rumi was magnetic before, but with Zoey next to her it’s like her aura redoubles; Mira can feel how the crowd thrills with every teasing smile sent their way.
Zoey too fills the stage. Rumi’s reacting to her as much as she’s leading, and Zoey’s grin borders on something almost triumphant as they jostle shoulders and Rumi gives way to her. They’re singing to each other, they’re singing to the crowd, they’re—
They’re singing to her and oh, the attention is addictive.

“Fifteen. But they’re all kinda—either they’re really two-people things,” like going to an Italian place with outdoor tables and candles and doing the cross-table spaghetti thing from that cute classic dog movie, which feels like it’d be hard to get a triangle going for, “or really hard to schedule,” like what if we kissed on a beach in Western Australia exactly under the peak 22nd July 2028 solar eclipse and we were all girls, “or meh.” Like doing that 500-piece puzzle Bobby gave us one time that’s farming dust bunnies in the closet, sorry Bobby—
“You’re doing a lot more second-guessing on this than usual.” Rumi’s fingers comb through Zoey’s still-loose hair.
“It’s just, you only get one First Date. One shot! That’s it. So it’s gotta be a standout one!”
