    Summary

He had done the arithmetic at fourteen and believed the answer ever since: a man who wanted nothing could lose nothing.

He'd arrived at it honestly. His parents had coached—juniors, the cold-rink end of it, nothing glamorous—and they had loved him the ordinary, total way parents do, the way you never think to be grateful for because you assume it is simply the weather you live in. Then a drunk driver on an ordinary road took the weather away entirely, and for two years afterward Scott belonged to no one, which is a thing that happens to a boy and then never quite stops happening.

    Or:
The one where fourteen-year-old Scott promises himself he'll never fall in love. And he keeps that promise... until he meets the one person who becomes his only exception.

    Summary

"Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.

"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."

Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.

Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.

Or, Scott Hunter runs into Ilya Rozanov sometime around midnight after a game, and the two saddest, loneliest, most closeted hockey players in New York end up sharing more than they mean to.

    Summary

Scott laughed but it sounded more like a sob. “Yeah, we are safe.” Ilya listened to him breathe for a few moments before Scott started to speak, almost to himself. “He wouldn’t be here if not for me.”

Trauma really had an effect on a person’s candor. Ilya rubbed a hand down his face. When did he become the one to comfort Scott Hunter? “Hunter, don't do that.”

“They made me grand marshal for Gay Days and Kip told me he had never been to Disney World.” He sobbed again. “I just wanted to take him to Disney World.”

Ilya sighed, “And he loves you for–”

“We were in line at the club,” Scott whispered–and that brought Ilya up short. “I wanted to take him dancing and we got in line at the club. Kip is the one who said he was tired and wanted to go back to the hotel. I almost got us both ki–”

    ---

What if Scott was in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016? What if he got front row seats to the effect the Pulse shooting had on a community.

Things are going well until one night, Ilya gets roofied at a gay club and is saved by none other than Scott Hunter.
