without a doubt the best wormfic written before like 2018 or so; this is genuinely amazing. complex relationships and character development and intrigue and a willingness to throw canon out and extrapolate. the kind of fic you'd expect from a fandom after ten years, not less than one. amazing.

Summary

He has no time to process this as Kid Win takes immediate revenge with his giant cannon. Tragedy after tragedy occurs until only one cape survives. This story is about the aftermath.

Beth thought she had enough problems to be getting on with, after Voldemort's resurrection only a couple months ago, and the Minister sticking his head in the sand like a stubborn idiot, and the Prophet making arses of themselves. She had a nasty feeling this year was going to be miserable, she'd never felt so ambivalent about going back to Hogwarts. Except she never even makes it that far — she hadn't quite reached King's Cross when fireballs start falling from the sky. On top of everything else going on, now Earth is being attacked by literal space aliens, because apparently the infamous Potter luck has escalated to screwing over the whole damn planet.
At least she was right about the "this year is going to be miserable" part.

Alright, let's do this one last time.
I am theonewhowas and for the last ten years I've been writing self-indulgent, self-insert Worm fanfic. I show up, I copy peoples' powers, I faff about, you know the drill. I've done it straight, I've done it twisted, I did it in a relationship dumpster fire, and I've got more WIP variants (for myself, for others, and with others) than I'd care to mention. You've seen me shapeshift (cool!), forcibly change my gender (oh no!), accept my gender (shock!), beat up Nazis (yay!), and generally learn a lot about myself. So why am I doing it again?
Well, a lot has changed in the last decade. I discovered I was trans, changed my name, moved across the country, and tried to carve a niche where me and my loved ones can live in a world that has increasingly gone mad (and is only getting worse). I got back into writing Wormfic with Taylor Kills Nazis, and looked back on my first serious fic with thoughts of 'wow that's a lot of bad fanon' and 'did I really woobie Purity? I really need to fix that.'
So I'm doing it again, but this time, Even More Completely Unoriginal.
Pre-(re-)written. Feedback appreciated. Omake exchange rules in effect.

so so good. it's not doing anything dramatically innovative, but my god is it doing it well. some of the most human-feeling characters i've ever had the pleasure of reading in not just fanfic but fiction in general. and an unbelievably satisfying ending; closure like i've rarely met in fandom.

12/24/24 update: genuinely top 5 fanfics of all time in my extremely perfect and correct and humble opinion
4/2/25 update: maybe not top 5 all time? it's real good, though. by a long shot some of the best interweaving of underlying lore and mechanics I've ever run into, though the story starts to meander a bit after chapter 20 or so. looks like things are coming to a close, though, and if it ends soon it's definitely one for the books. first ten chapters of this are some of the best fanfic i've ever read.

Summary
Hermione and Pansy’s eighth year at Hogwarts is coming to an uninspiring and rather dull end. After almost nine months of monotonous classes, stressful exams, and all of the other wonders of almost-adulthood, both are ready to get the fuck out of Hogwarts and not look back. The only consolation lies just beyond graduation-- Pansy has accepted a dream job offer, and the paperwork for Hermione’s London apartment has, at last, been finalized.
But, of course, it can’t last. When two idiots in their Charms class get into a fight, Pansy and Hermione are at the wrong place during the wrong time, and because of it they’re plunged into a chaotic and seemingly never-ending situation that threatens to derail their lives as they know it.
