You realise that you're pulling your limbs closer to yourself, hunkering down, and force yourself to relax. There's nothing to be scared of. Grace isn't sick, you would have noticed. Right? And even if it is sick, it's not dying, its ship is protected from radiation, so it won't be like- it's going to wake up. You will watch over it until it wakes up.
Grace has a nightmare. Rocky takes it badly.

They've got four years of time to kill now that they're headed to Erid and Grace has to make the unfortunate discovery that outside of science, he really doesn't have too many other interests. Which is fine, in his opinion, he's got a whole universe outside his window to study. Who needs movies when you've got science and discovery?
Rocky seems to disagree.
Or, Rocky somewhat learns about human entertainment and decides Grace needs to like something that isn't work

“I think little humans love you,” Rocky says. “Must. You are—”
He hesitates, thinking.
“Need word. Love very much, but not person. Love thing. Love doing. Need nothing else.”
He has a way of working his limited vocabulary into just the right order. I turn to look at him like a starving animal that’s just been offered food, crumpling under how warm it makes me feel.
“Passionate,” I say weakly. Rocky sings the Eridian word, a multi-layered crescendo of chords that each seem to pour into the next, one by one by one. “I guess I am.”
Rocky gestures with a chain link he’s picked up, getting back to work. “Everything you do, you are focused. Work work work. You teach me language. You teach me human ways. No give up until problem is solved. No rest until stupid. Passion.”
“Darn,” I say, for lack of more intelligent words. Rocky briefly looks up from his chain.
“What, question?”
“I never thought about it like that.”

Or: With nothing to do besides putting together a chain one link at a time, Grace and Rocky find time to have a moment.

When Grace met Rocky, however, the nightmares lessened - not fully, not at first, but gradually. In fact, the day after his would-be friend moved into the Hail Mary, he slept for a week and a half straight without dreaming at all. He supposed it was the company, and the security he felt having Rock watch over him.
Which is why Rocky couldn't understand what was happening when Grace started talking.

He’s fine, he’s slept alone before, he can sleep alone again. He doesn’t need someone watching him, he’s not a baby, crying in the dark for a… what’s the word…. nightlight! Adults don’t babble for their parents after a nightmare. His skin doesn’t crawl, there’s no sense of impending doom, there’s no danger crawling up from the shadows, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with Rocky- he’s in the next room over, the same place he’s been for the last few days, working on his project alone, just like he wanted-
Grace is tired. He’s so, so tired.
Or: Grace and Rocky have an argument that results in them avoiding each other, which leads Grace to realise he's become more reliant on Eridian customs then he first thought.

Grace is always in pain. The painkillers help manage it. But he's at a point where increasing the dose would most likely do more damage than good, and still, the pain is there. It always is. He's pretty sure Rocky knows it, too, even if he tries not to let it show too much.
"A little."
"No lie, please."
Right. The little bugger would know. Of course he would. They've spent literal years getting more and more codependent, it would be weird if he didn't.
"Grace in pain, statement," he confirms. In an attempt to be truthful, but not worry Rocky too much, he adds, "My head mostly. Little bit of muscle pain, too." Pause. Inhale, exhale. Continue. "And the formication and burning in my hands again."
"Ah. The small insects."

And then they wiped the tear soaked palm down their carapace, leaving a filmy streak on the suit in its wake.
“Wet, so wet and leaky, so wet and leaky and beautiful just for me, oh, oh Savior Grace–” They brought their hand back to his cheeks and swiped away the remaining wetness that stained them and then they— they—
Grace watched on in horror as they lowered the wet and tear-soaked claw to their ventral seam, stroking it over their most vulnerable area with a shudder and high-pitched moan.

Summary
Ryland Grace is 8 months into his and Rocky’s journey to Erid, and he has long since remembered a detail about himself that had been forgotten in the wake of the amnesia, and ignored in the chaos of saving stars. It’s disheartening, really, Ryland thinks, to realize that even if you forget what your mother’s voice sounded like, you’ll never forget the irrational worry embedded in the very fibres of your being.
