It was the seventh month of the third year of the Spirit War. The Protectorate of Gaothmai had that week fallen before the banners of the Saraz Imperium. The Empire would soon turn its gaze across the sea to Rhuv, to bolster its badly overstretched front lines there.
This news reached the Wizard Sworn by speaking mirror, in a report given by a harried-looking Imperial lieutenant. Sworn himself had not set foot outside the tower in these last ten months; shortly after the civil war broke out in earnest he found himself permanently stationed in the Erien, under the direct command of the Sword.

The next time Jaing slept he had a dream—it wasn’t the next night, per se, he didn’t think, but the next time he slept deeply enough to dream he had a dream. Or it wasn’t exactly a dream, or it was halfway between a dream and a fantasy, something that bloomed right in the space between the thoughts that Jaing had and the thoughts that happened to him.
The dream and the effect it had on Jaing shattered any optimism he might have harbored, regarding the possibility of leaving behind forever what had happened with Sev in the tent in the rain.
