Summary
“I want you as my graduate advisor.”
“What?” Carol’s hands fell from her bag. “You – what?”
Zosia smiled, teeth on display now. “I want you as my advisor next year. Like I said, I have been waiting for this class the entirety of my time here. I don't want anyone else claiming you before I do.”
So, Carol was fine. She was fine and the fact that she repeated that constantly, a mantra in her head, probably should have raised some red flags, but it didn't.
She published her books under her pen name, taught at the university, and did not let an unhinged graduate student blow up her life. Just for the fuck of it, it seemed like.

Summary
Unfortunately, Carol could only watch helplessly as the garment fell away from the woman's flawless skin. From her vantage point, Carol could see the woman's breast in outline – taut skin, pink nipples, and a devastating lack of a tanline.
The two books in her hand fell onto her towel with a double thump. The woman's eyes slowly met her own in amusement. Carol immediately glanced away in embarrassment – it was a miracle she didn't give herself whiplash.
Europeans and nude beaches shouldn't mix – or, at least, that was Carol Sturka's opinion before a literal Polish model got her claws into her sunburnt skin.

Summary
BEEEEEEEEEEP.
The honk comes without warning. For half a second, Carol thinks she has been shot.
Then it keeps going. A sustained, unbroken, eat-shit honk. The kind LA people deploy when they want to fuck you up as a person.
The honking stops. The Range Rover's window comes down.
"Are you leaving the space or not." The woman says it flat, and bored.
Carol puts her own window down. Slowly, for the fuck of it.
“No, lady. I'm not leaving. I’m parked. This is a parking space, and I have parked a car in it. Like a human being is allowed to. Your response to that was to put your hand flat on a horn for what, an hour? What the fuck is wrong with you?”

She's right. Carol hates it. (Until she doesn't.)

Summary
Two years after the Unjoining, she saw Zosia in London, of all places – nearly unrecognizable in her winter attire – bundled up to her nose. But Carol felt her presence like a sawed-off shotgun wound to her stomach. The sight of her eyes peeking over the edge of her scarf, sparkling with mirth as she shouldered the woman she was walking with –
Well, it was fucking devastating.
‘Who is Carol?’ Spray-painted in canary yellow, stood out against the rain-darkened concrete of the building across the street from The Ritz where Carol was staying.

“Carol."
Zosia Bartoś has said Sturka on panel shows and she has said my colleague on Twitter and she has said "the anchor at Liberty" in interviews and she has said "Carol Sturka" the full two-word name in writing, but she has not said Carol, just Carol, since a hotel room in Cincinnati ten years ago.
"You can say gay on television.”
Someone in the audience gasps, another says oh my god too loudly into a mic that should have been dead and the room comes apart.

Summary
Twenty eight year old Carol Sturka is an aspiring author, presently working a temp position at Brooks & Bennet Law Offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She's also a self-proclaimed misanthrope, insulted by romance, holding firm in her assertion that to need another person is weakness, and to want them is even worse. So, literally running face first into the most gorgeous woman she's ever seen is maybe the worst case scenario. It's about to be her lucky day.
Helen Umstead is being careful. She understands all too well what it is to have your life feel completely out of your control, and she isn't about to let it happen again. She finally has a real job, with room for forward momentum, and her own apartment. She can manage the subtle chaos of daily life, and she feels stable for the first time ever. So, that restlessness nagging at her from the pit of her stomach, waking her up at all hours of the night, really isn't helpful. The monotony is what's best for her, or at least that's what she tells herself. Getting involved with the whirlwind that is Carol Sturka is a risk. A big one. And she just might have to take it.
TLDR: Baby sturstead desperately tries not to fall in love (three guesses how that turns out)

Summary
Carol finds it in the third week of living alone with an unhived Zosia: a New York Times article, “To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This.” An intimacy experiment involving thirty-six increasingly personal questions and, at the end of it, four uninterrupted minutes of eye contact, which sounds fake and humiliating and somehow still not bad enough to stop her.
Carol, obviously, prints it out.

"Oh, you want me to cuck you with the woman committing identity fraud?" Carol teased, pulling Helen closer.
"That's not cucking," Helen said, as if it mattered, "that'd be if you wanted to have sex with Zosia because I’m a pathetic little worm, and I’m sort of sadly jerking off in the corner."

Summary
Unlike her wife, Helen walks toward Zosia first, wrapping her arms around Zosia’s lithe frame in a warm, comfortable embrace.
Zosia happily returns the hug, hands splayed against Helen’s back as they stand together for a few seconds. Then, she steps back and turns to face Carol, who has already pulled both of her suitcases out of the trunk.
“You aren’t going to say hi to me first?” Zosia teases with a pout, tilting her head as she watches Carol.
Carol freezes instantly, releasing her grip on the handles of Zosia’s suitcases as she realizes she’d jumped into chivalrous mode on instinct. A light blush paints her cheeks, and she bites her lip as she looks up to meet Zosia’s gaze.
“Hi,” she says shyly.
Zosia’s pout deepens, “That’s it? I came all this way, and all I get is a shy little hi?”

Summary
Carol misses those nights when she took silence and sleep for granted. It’s been two weeks since they have stopped, and the repercussions are starting to show in the sluggish way she moves about in the morning. In the headaches that remind her of the worst kind of hangover. And in the irritation she feels at the slightest inconvenience, or even at her lack of inspiration when she sits in front of a blank document on her computer.
Well, maybe that last part isn’t entirely someone else’s fault. But still, she should do something about the fucking noise.
[...]
“Well, then? Do you need something?”
Carol takes a deep breath. For the first time since moving in this awfully sleazy apartment complex, she’s about to be the wet blanket everybody hates – or maybe appreciates for the intervention, she hopes.
“Yeah,” she mutters and points to the door. “Could you turn it down? I – I’m trying to get some sleep.”
The other seems to ponder her request for a second before shrugging. “It’s not that loud.”or
a new tenant moves in the upstairs apartment. She's loud, careless, annoying. And hot. And Carol has a hard time dealing with that.

DETECTIVE AU
+
All you need to know is that Detective Carol Sturka is a little sad, a little sarcastic, and a little horny.
And Lieutenant Zosia Nowak is rude and hot.
+
“Are you always this insufferable?”
Zosia’s eyes widen almost indiscernibly.
“Careful, Detective,” she says lowly, taking a deliberate step forward. She places her hand on the metal bar next to Carol’s and their fingers brush together. Neither of them pulls away. She tilts her head down ever so slightly. “That almost sounds like a compliment.”
