Summary
150 years ago, a man who came to be the most reviled jujutsu sorcerer forever marred the dignity of the Kamo clan before suddenly disappearing. It starts after a case, the way too many dangerous things do: exhaustion, grief, adrenaline with nowhere to go, Jane at Lisbon’s apartment making tea like he has always belonged in the quiet corners of her life. One night becomes another. A stolen kiss in her kitchen becomes his jacket left over her chair, her tea cabinet rearranged by hands too careful to be casual, his body in her bed, her name in his mouth, and both of them pretending they are not building something fragile in the dark.
To Jane, it has never been casual.
To Lisbon, calling it casual is the only way she knows how to survive wanting him. Jane’s grief has teeth. His love comes with ghosts, revenge, vanished rooms, and a wedding ring that still catches the light. She is terrified that if she lets herself call this love, truly call it love, she will spend every morning waiting for him to disappear.
So she makes it smaller.
Jane lets her.
Because some of her is better than none of her.
Until it is not.

And in the vital second where he could be doing anything, just about anything to avoid confrontation, to get out of the way or try to placate— Bruno stares at it blankly.
He’s sure he heard a voice; clearly enough to let himself expect something else. Words.
It just doesn’t scan. It doesn’t.
Bruno is bitten, and it gets much worse from there. At least, that's what he's expecting.
