"Yes, I heard that," Arthur said, crossing his arms. "And where, exactly, do you think you will be taking me?!"
Arthur's heart leapt up in his chest as Merlin seized the prince's hands in his own. The small man leaned in, whispering in Arthur's ear, "Somewhere only we know, where we can be alone."

OR
Voldemort realises early on his connection to Harry and decides to use that to his advantage. Unfortunately, it takes Harry 3 years to notice and by that time the shift has already begun.

Voldemort took a graceful step forward, the air around him clinging close and darkening as if he had called the shadows to accompany him. "Mine to harm," he continued, his voice a soft. "Mine to conquer. Mine to defeat. Mine to torture. Mine... to kill."
Red eyes bore into green, staring intently as if peering into his very soul."And mine..." His magic brushed against Harry, nearly suffocating with its potency, choking him and binding him all at once, marking him for a fate he never wanted. "... to decide when to kill."
Harry returned from the graveyard to a world drunk on lies and fear only to be taken prisoner by Voldemort right from under Dumbledore's nose. One month wasting away in captivity left him empty, haunted by the deaths of those stolen from him.
Until everything changes, when Harry gains the Dark Lord's interest and is set free of his prison. When he is entered into an altogether different fight - one in which he must finally choose what he really wants.

Summary
The dust sparkled in the light. Like stars captured in the palm of his hands. Merlin loved the way it looked.
Without considering the effects, the sorcerer allowed his magic to flow into the glass.
It responded immediately.
The powder glowed brightly. Shaking in an almost violent manner as it flew out of Merlin’s palm and up into the sky like a dragon.
It soared with a smoky trail until the glass shattered with a boom! His sensitive ears ached but he watched in awe as the powered and magic caused a wondrous sight.
A starburst in the sky. The Powder expanded and the red showed up greatly against the dark morning, but it wasn’t just red. Blues and purples were there too.
Merlin’s magic had made it larger. More expressive. There were images of dragons and butterflies too.
“Fire in the sky!” A familiar voice said, in fear and in something else.

Merlin was in a rush to pack his and Arthur’s bags after they left the court meeting. His mind was running at a million miles a minute. Not only did Uther just announce that Arthur and the knight had a quest but they needed to go find one of the most dangerous magic users to complete said quest.
Or
Uther tells the knights dragons are back and they need to go find the last dragon lord before the beasts strike.

Summary
Gwaine laughs so hard he needs to sit down, landing heavily on the rickety chair in his chamber, and then so hard that he actually can't breathe and he's momentarily afraid he might die from it.
"Well," he says when he's recovered enough to speak. "Our King has finally managed to get hold of the right stick, at least, even if he is firmly grasping it by the wrong end."
Merlin glares at him, like he can't see why this is the funniest thing Gwaine has ever heard. "What the hell did you say to him?"
A throwaway comment leads Arthur to an inevitable conclusion: Gwaine is a sorcerer, and has been protecting him and his knights with magic for years. There's only one thing to do – repeal the ban on magic.
Now if only he could work out why this makes Merlin so angry.
