“Uh-uh.” He turned his head, nuzzling Ilya’s palm and then sucking his pinky finger into his mouth, eyes falling shut in contentment.
“You know what happens to mouthy puppies?” he asked, soft and dark, watching as one of Shane’s eyes slid open and refocused on him. “They get muzzled. Cannot get anything in their mouths. Then they learn.”
Or: Shane likes to bite. Ilya decides to muzzle him about it.

Summary
The question isn’t what Ilya would do to protect that love, but instead what wouldn’t Ilya do to protect that love? Ilya would do bad, bad things for Shane Hollander, in many different regards. Ilya would also undoubtedly wither away and out of existence, if he ever did something that ended up scaring Shane away from him permanently.
All of these questions are pointless. There’s only one, actual question that needs to be asked: is it better to speak or to die?
Ilya would argue in favor of death, every time.
Three months after the incident and nothing has changed. Ilya is charged with taking care of Shane after his wisdom teeth are taken out. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

And Ilya’s face had changed— not to anger, it was never anger, even when he pretended at it, just a kind of electric anticipation, his lips curling back over his teeth like he was trying to taste Shane in the air— before Shane had blurted out I ruined it, though. He’d sat up a little straighter.
A pause. Ruined it, solnyshko?
Shane had nodded.
