It was a good story. The perfect little tale to tell little children before bed and inspire fear into those with gullible minds. Because once the children were brainwashed, then the hard part of controlling a province was already done. Cultural genocide, or something close to it.
And though the story made a majority of the population feel protected, it also turned an unfortunate part into targets. Taking innocent people and painting them in a light that made them seem evil. People like Tasim. And people like her.

Since the circus arrived, the streets have been littered with flyers and performers. And since then, someone who introduced himself as 'Jester' has been making daily trips to the library. Edith usually wouldn't think much of it if she didn’t sense that there was something peculiar with him—no, all of them.
Her superstitious neighbors were probably rubbing off on her. Or maybe she's read too much fiction. His lingering gaze on her, like he was studying the very depths of her soul, certainly wasn't helping.
She tries to play it cool, convincing herself it was just nothing. That the circus will leave soon enough.
Except...the circus doesn't seem to want to leave her alone. Nor let her go.
And for some reason, Edith doesn't want them to.
