He didn’t say anything for a long stretch, and Haru counted the seconds in his head—one for every week Rin had been gone, two for every time he’d waited in silence for a reply that never came. Finally, Rin let out a slow breath and dropped his shoulders. The tension that had braced his body for a fight loosened, and at last Haru saw him not as an opponent, but as someone who might also have been a little lost.
“I had to,” Rin finally whispered.
